Progressive rehabilitation after a stroke or brain haemorrhage

Rehabilitation often stops after six months under the guise that further recovery is not or hardly possible. This is more a reflection of a limited budget and lack of the latest knowledge on brain change than anything else.

Introduction

Researchers have shown that a further recovery is also possible after six months. In fact, your brain can continue to recover for a lifetime after damage due to a cerebral haemorrhage or infarction. See the story of Linda Radestad (author of Stroke Rebel). In addition, researchers find that concepts such as the optimisation of neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to adjust itself) are not or insufficiently used, which also applies to the ability to reduce spasticity and to improve movement patterns by using new training techniques. Issues such as the reduction of neuroinflammation and the reduction of fatigue are also not or hardly addressed. Brain Rehab Research Ltd. supports rehabilitation centres and professionals worldwide in applying these new insights so that a further recovery even after the first six months is possible. One of these centres is now open here in Zutphen: Brain and Spine Rehab.

When you are dealing with persistent problems after a stroke or cerebral haemorrhage, you often have to deal with additional complaints such as:

  • Mental and physical fatigue
  • Spasticity and weakness in your movements
  • Hypersensitivity to light and/ or sound
  • Faster overstimulation
  • Sleeping problems
  • Difficulty thinking and/ or concentrating
  • Balancing problems
  • Problems with motor skills such as walking and using the hand of the affected side
  • Insufficient visual focus
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Changing moods

Fortunately, your brain has the ability for a lifelong recovery

Although further recovery after a brain haemorrhage or infarction is in most cases a very slow road, scientists are increasingly showing that it is indeed possible to further improve your brain and body functions after a stroke/ haemorrhage. This is based on the so-called neuroplasticity principle, the ability of your brain to adjust throughout your entire life, even when it is severely damaged.

The key here are intensity, frequency and duration

… and repetition of the stimulation given to the brain (e.g. movement, visual, auditory, olfactory stimulation). Furthermore, it is important that the training you are receiving is aiming on regaining functions as specific as possible and does place as little burden as possible of the brain.

What we can do for you

If you want to know what we can do for you, and how we can achieve the next step in your recovery after a brain injury/ hemorrhage with the latest insights and research equipment, for much lower costs, go to the details of the Brain Rehab protocol Program we work with.

View the masterclasses about the consequences of brain injury here

Check out the free masterclasses about the often forgotten underlying problems after brain trauma below.

Furthermore, Arjan has made a number of master classes on the consequences of brain trauma such as infarction/ hemorrhage or concussion. These are covering a number of subjects that are often given too little attention, and that can make a difference in the further recovery after head trauma. Arjan does not only explain how the approach to persistent problems can be tackled differently and more completely, he also gives tips in the masterclasses which you can immediately put to work yourself.

The topics Arjan deals with:

  • Brain(neuro)inflammation after a brain trauma that is hardly ever paid attention to
  • Underlying balance problem that determine the further recovery (even if you do not experience dizziness)
  • The manner and intensity of physical training and how it affects the brain.

A word of warning: The videos are rather long and it is therefore advisable to watch them in chunks. It is also a good idea to have a pen and paper to hand in order to take notes. For most viewers there is a lot of new information and topics that you can be taken advantage of.

Brain Questionnaire

In the last video Arjan talks about a brain questionnaire that you can fill in to start identifying where your real underlying problems may come from (you can download this at the bottom of this page).

Free screening to map out further possibilities

It is also possible to schedule a free and non-binding screening with Arjan Kuipers after completing the questionnaire, where he will assess what else we can do for you in your specific situation. You can register below by clicking on the link to schedule a screening or send an email to Cornelia: [email protected]. Please complete the Brain Questionnaire before your visit (scroll down on this page).

Recommendations

1. Introduction masterclass

In this video Arjan discusses five reasons why you do not recover further after a stroke / bleeding.

2. Brain inflammation: a major problem after brain injury

In this video, Arjan addresses one of the most underexposed problems after a concussion or other brain trauma.

3. The key to further recovery

In this video, Arjan Kuipers shows how central equilibrium integration can be disrupted by brain trauma (without having to experience dizziness). You will also hear why this underlying problem is often the key to further recovery.

4. The way you train has a lot of influence on your brain

This is the introductory video in which Arjan talks about intensity and the type of training that has more effect on improving brain function and reducing brain inflammation.
